It delights me to report that Baby Driver is a monumental fucking triumph. This is the best action movie of 2017 and the best thing Wright has done to date.
WORDS: Patrick Kolan | @patchkolan There are a few ways I want to approach this, so let’s get the obvious stuff out of the way. Alien: Covenant is a very pretty, very watchable disappointment in all the same ways as Prometheus before it. Nothing in the intervening years demonstrates to me that Ridley Scott has learned about [...]
Thanks to our pals at Icon Film Distribution Australia, we’re giving away a set of sweet action films and free movie tickets to celebrate the release of another equally cool-looking action flick, War on Everyone.
Get your first proper look at the Major in action in the debut trailer for Ghost in the Shell. Scarlett Johansson takes on the lead role, supported by the masterful Takeshi Kitano. Director Rupert Sanders looks to have a firm grasp of the source material here - which is frankly a relief for us. Check it [...]
In his book Bambi Vs. Godzilla, screenwriting legend David Mamet puts forward an argument as to why we watch so many lacklustre, big budget Hollywood films: one time we saw a really phenomenal one, and ever since then, we’ve been “chasing the dragon”.
A film called "Grudge Match" starring Stallone and De Niro sounds like it would be dark, gritty, bloody, violent action film. It deviates from the core story with lumpy stretches of exposition and wholly invents action scenes solely to provide popcorn-chewing moments late in the film. The [...]
The long-awaited return of moustachioed lothario anchorman Ron Burgundy is a disappointment; it’s as forced and puffed up as his hairdo – a series of stitched together gags that form an incoherent story about the perils of manipulative media. It should know; Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues is all about manipulating old set-ups and leveraging [...]
When Robert Downey Jr.’s opening monologue kicks in over 'Iron Man 3's smartly edited opening sequence, the standard is set for a tonally different Marvel Comics film adaptation. You can thank veteran action film director Shane Black for that. His previous catalogue reads like a how-to guide to crafting smart, sexy action – itself exactly [...]
Many of you will have already discovered, with some dismay, that ‘Paranormal Romance’ now constitutes its own section at your local bookstore. As a genre, it boasts such flagships as the ‘Twilight’ saga, ‘The Vampire Diaries’ and, more recently, ‘The Caster Chronicles’ - the first instalment of which is ‘Beautiful Creatures’, the inspiration for a [...]
